19/20 Budget Savings Programme

We are in no doubt about the challenges that face us. The external environment for Higher Education is volatile and uncertain, as the competitive environment for students and staff shifts and intensifies. The international context is also very important for us, with the impact of Brexit already being felt and with more change to come. Government’s and customers’ expectations of us are changing, and the rapid advance of new technology promises to transform the way learning and research are carried out.

We are facing difficult choices and having to introduce difficult changes. Throughout this process we will:

  • be honest, open and transparent
  • communicate all messages through existing channels
  • always provide opportunities to provide feedback, and
  • provide external sources of help and guidance

The communication channels we will use are:

  • This page - it lists all the sources of information, help and guidance and will be kept up-to-date by HR Services
  • One-to-one discussions for affected staff
  • Dissemination through CMT
  • Team Briefings
  • Targeted emails
  • Bulletin
  • Post (for those on family related or long term sick leave)
  • Meetings with our trade unions

The process

1. The Vice Chancellor’s email sent to all staff on 20 June 2019, outlines the plans for budget savings.

2. Briefings by Directors of Professional Services, with detailed proposals (see below) available, will be held with their teams within a few days of the VC's email.

3. Please note that the savings proposals (see below) for Faculties are going to be approximately one month later than those for Professional Services.

Providing feedback

Please submit your feedback and any alternative proposals to Your feedback can remain anonymous if you wish – please state this in your email. We encourage you to send your feedback early, but the deadline is by 12 noon on Wednesday 31 July 2019 for Professional Services and 12 noon on Wednesday 4 September 2019 for Faculties. You can also submit feedback through your Director or Dean, or through the recognised trade unions (see contact details below).
