Cycling safety and etiquette

There are a just a few simple things that you can do to make sure you stay safe while cycling.

  • Even if the road looks clear don't jump red traffic lights.
  • Make sure you have front & back lights and a red rear reflector. It is illegal to cycle in the dark without them and you could face a fine if you do not have them on your bike.
  • Be aware and follow road signs and rules about cycle paths, either on the pavement or roads.
  • Don't cycle down one way streets unless there is a dedicated cycle path.
  • Be considerate to pedestrians, other cyclists and motorists. This includes not cycling while drunk, aggressive or intimidating cycling.

The Highway Code provides further information about the rules for cyclists.

Cycle maintenance

Make sure you use a bike that‘s right for you, and you regularly check it to ensure it's fit to ride. Watch out for our FREE 'Dr Bike' maintenance sessions, where you can get your bike checked for free, by signing up to the Bicycle Users Group or following us on Twitter or Facebook.

ARU Cycling repair stations

If you can’t wait for our Dr Bike session, use our bike repair stations which have a pump, and a range of eight tools to make adjustments and repairs on the spot.

You can secure your bike with the stable mount and the tools are securely attached by retractable stainless steel cables.

The repair stations are at the following locations:

  • Outside the bike shelter by Telecoms opposite Marconi

  • Compass House bike stands
  • Cycle stands near Collier Road entrance behind Ruskin

Cycle security

It can be a real hassle if your bike gets stolen just because it wasn't secured with a quality lock to a solid fixed object. We have been given advice from the Cambridgeshire Constabulary on how best to look after your bike.

The SU sell a range of D locks and lights and we have lots of cycle parking on campus.

Cycle hire

Hiring a bike could be a convenient alternative to buying one, and many cycle hire shops in Cambridge offer student discounts.

Links to retailers are provided to help new students in finding a bike to hire. Anglia Ruskin University has not checked the quality of services provided by these retailers and does not accept any responsibility for the services they offer.

Cycle lockers

We have cycle lockers on our Chelmsford campus for the storage of cycling equipment or clothing.  Please contact our helpdesk to check availability and then complete an application form.
