Sustainable Purchasing, Fairtrade & Food

ARU world logo

We spend millions of pounds every year at ARU on goods and services to deliver teaching and research and to provide accommodation, catering and campuses for our staff and students. Our environmental policy commits us to “Adopt purchasing policies which promote environmental and social sustainability, including Fairtrade”.

Sustainable Purchasing

In order to deliver our above environmental policy commitment we have developed an overarching sustainable purchasing policy. This forms part of our Financial Regulations and must be applied in all procurement exercises.

Our environment strategy contains an action plan detailing how the implementation of the commitments in this policy will be managed and measured.

Fairtrade logo

We have been a Fairtrade certified University since 2007. This means that we have made a commitment to supporting and using Fairtrade. We ensure Fairtrade products are available in our restaurants and vending areas and through hospitality, and we raise awareness of Fairtrade and the benefits that it brings to producers in developing countries.

Fairtrade is a growing international movement that seeks greater equity in international trade, by offering better trading conditions. This secures the rights of farmers and workers in the developing world by ensuring a decent price is paid for goods covering production costs and providing both farmers and their workers a living wage. Sustainable Food

Our Sustainable Food Policy details how we embed our environmental, social and ethical commitments within our campus catering services. See our catering website for further details and the growing list of sustainability awards and accreditations achieved.

Fairtrade, Sustainable Purchasing and Food Group

Delivery of the above Sustainable Purchasing, Fairtrade and Food policy commitments is overseen by this group which meets 3 times per year and follows these terms of reference.
