Encouraging biodiversity on our campuses is an important part of our environmental strategy. We encourage staff and students to get involved and we keep a log of all sightings on campus.

We have produced some biodiversity trail maps of our Chelmsford and Cambridge campuses, allowing you to take time out and explore the local wildlife. Download one of our maps and explore areas such as the Millpond and bug hotel in Chelmsford or the beehive and green wall in Cambridge.

To help achieve our objectives we have formed a Biodiversity steering group that has representation from Estates and Facilities Services, the department of Life Science‘s, the Global Sustainability Institute and the Student‘s Union, including student societies with an interest in biodiversity.

Biodiversity steering group

The group meets 3 times per year and follows these terms of reference.

Biodiversity Net Gain policy

This policy outlines how we will balance the biodiversity commitments contained within our environmental policy with the operational needs of our busy campuses such as identifying land for new buildings or facilities. It ensures that the net value of biodiversity on our land is protected or enhanced.

Biodiversity benchmark

Biodiversity Benchmark is an award for businesses to recognise and reward continual Biodiversity improvement. The award is run by the Wildlife Trust. We have started our certification process and hope to be the first UK university to obtain the award.

Green pockets

You may have noticed some ‘green pockets‘ springing up around campus - browse through our case studies to see how we have been enhancing our campuses.
