Childcare and schools

Anglia Ruskin University campuses are ideally located within close proximity of a range of childcare providers, allowing you to choose the best option for you and your family.

To support you in accessing your preferred childcare, Anglia Ruskin University will release your timetable as early as possible to enable you to plan your childcare arrangements around your studies. You are able to request changes to your timetable, which may help you with your childcare arrangements, however this is not always possible and please do adhere to the deadline provided. For more information please see our timetabling page.

If you are studying a course that requires you to take part in placements, then you will need to talk to your faculty directly who will try to give you as much notice as possible of the arrangements.

Emergency Childcare

It is important that as a student you have childcare arrangements in place so that you can manage your studies as well as your parental responsibilities. However we know that sometimes things happen outside of your control which could affect your ability to attend university, for example your child is ill or your childcare arrangements break down unexpectedly. Therefore it is worth thinking in advance what your emergency childcare solution will be so that when it happens, you are prepared and can minimise disruption to your study as much as possible.

Finding Childcare

Some childcare providers have waiting lists so we would advise that you make contact with your preferred choices as soon as possible.

There are different childcare routes available and they are fully explained on your County Council’s website as well as a tool to search for your ideal provider, allowing you to filter by type, location, opening hours etc. You can access reports of all registered childcare providers and schools on the Ofsted website to help you inform your decision.

We suggest that you visit your preferred childcare provider before you book a place to check that you and your child will be comfortable there. Remember that what works for one family may not be right for you, so trust your instincts.

When you visit, ask lots of questions – there is no such thing as a silly question when thinking about your childcare. It can be useful to write a list of questions in advance so that you remember everything. If you decide a nursery setting is right for your family, there is some guidance about what sort of questions you may find it useful to ask on the Childcare Directory website.

Remember, there is no “right” childcare route to take, you need to choose the childcare solution that works best for you and your family.

We understand that if you are a commuting student it may be more convenient for you to make childcare arrangements where you live, rather than where you study. Your local council will have a search facility of all registered childcare in your area and the following websites may also be useful. Don’t forget to use the Ofsted website to help inform your decision.
