Supporting Students in Distress

This training event sets out to increase awareness, reduce anxiety and expand understanding around supporting students in crisis. During the course of the workshop, there will be an opportunity to:

  • Increase your awareness of both your own personal processes and those of students at times of increased stress.
  • Focus on practical possibilities, including when, how and why you would need to refer into other services.
  • Acknowledge the importance of holding fast to professional boundaries while offering empathic, compassionate support.
  • Become more knowledgeable about all the support services offered within the university who may be able to help.

Mental Health First Aid Lite – 3 hour training

Our Mental Health First Aid Lite course is an introductory mental health awareness course.

The course will be enable you to:

  • Gain a wider understanding, for yourself and others, of some issues surrounding mental health.
  • Gain a greater understanding of how and why positive and negative mental health affects business.
  • Work more effectively with people experiencing mental health problems.

By the end of the course you'll be able to:

  • Identify the discrimination surrounding mental health problems.
  • Define mental health and some mental health problems.
  • Relate to people's experiences.
  • Help support people with mental health problems.
  • Look after your own mental health.

Mental Health First Aid – 2 day training

The Mental Health First Aid course is an internationally recognised programme and is now running in more than 21 countries around the world. It is designed to give people the skills, knowledge, awareness and understanding to help and support themselves and others experiencing a mental health problem and recognising the symptoms at an early stage to improve the recovery process.

The training course is an intensive certificated course delivered over two days aimed at those without specialist mental health training to help themselves and others.

On completion of this activity delegates will be able to:

  • Spot the early signs of a mental health problem.
  • Feel confident helping someone experiencing a problem .
  • Provide help on a first aid basis.
  • Help stop a mental illness from getting worse.
  • Guide someone to the right support.
  • Help reduce the stigma of mental ill health.

Mental Health First Aid in Higher Education - 1 day

The Higher Education mental health awareness and skills course was created in consultation with leading student mental health charity Student Minds.

This one day course qualifies you as a Higher Education MHFA Champion.

It is designed to give you:

  • A deeper understanding of the issues that relate to student and staff mental health
  • Skills to spot early signs of mental ill health
  • Confidence to signpost someone to support – whether that’s through self-help resources, university counselling services, the NHS, or a mix.
  • Knowledge and confidence to advocate for mental health awareness
