Business

Ranging from general management roles to consultants offering subject-specific advice, the business sector has a lot to offer.

HR

Working in Human Resources involves a range of activities required by organisations that employ people, whatever the size or type of business. These cover areas such as working practices, recruitment, pay, conditions of employment, negotiation with external work-related agencies, and equality and diversity.

Marketing and PR

Marketing is one of the most popular graduate careers, making entry extremely competitive.

Public relations (PR) is about managing reputation. This career field aims to gain understanding and support for clients as well as to influence opinion and behaviour.

Accountancy

Graduates entering this profession who want a recognised qualification must expect to study for professional examinations whilst working. There are different routes to becoming a qualified accountant.

The four major routes to qualifying are:

  1. Chartered Accountants (ACA) many graduates train with a public practice accountancy firm but it is becoming more common to find training opportunities in both large organisations and public sector organisations. For further information visit The Institute of Chartered Accountants
  2. Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) - can opt to work in any sector and have the opportunity to train and work in a wide variety of organisations from large, multinational companies to small, local businesses For further information visit The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants
  3. Chartered Public Finance Accountant (CIPFA) is responsible for ensuring the effective operation of accounting and financial activities within public sector organisations. Banking and Investment

There are many business areas in which graduates can find jobs in banking and investment which can be researched using the Prospects website.

Roles include:

  • Retail Banking - covers financial services provided by the high-street banks and building societies for individual customers and small businesses.
  • Investment Banking- covers the provision of specialised financial services and advice to industrial, commercial and government clients.
  • Private Banking - specialist banks offering banking, investment and financial services to high net-worth individuals.

Building Societies, Insurance and Actuarial Services

There are several roles within this sector which can be researched using the Prospects website.

The main roles are: Insurance Broker, Claims Inspector, Loss Adjuster, Underwriter and Pensions Scheme Manager/Consultant.
