The following timetable is based on information provided by the REF team at Research England and will be updated further as more information is made available. Last updated 1 August 2018.

REF 2021

1 January 2000
Earliest publication date of research outputs used to underpin impacts claimed in REF 2021. Possibly 1 January 1999; REF 2014 extended period for some disciplines may be abandoned.
1 August 2013
Opening of the REF 2021 assessment period for impact and environment data including research income, research income-in-kind, and research doctoral degree completions.
1 January 2014
Opening of the REF 2021 assessment period for outputs.
1 April 2016
Initial Open Access requirements come into force for journal articles and conference contributions accepted as of this date.

Lord Stern's Review of the Research Excellence Framework report published

Deadline for submission of the Code of Practice governing output selection and staff identification for the REF, for approval by the HEFCE with the advice of the REF Equality and Diversity Advisory Panel.

Opening of the Survey on Submission Intentions for the REF
6 December 2019 Final deadline for requests from HEIs to make multiple submissions, to request exemption from submitting very small units, and to submit impact case studies requiring security clearance.
