God Bless the Child
an evening with Billie Holiday

written and directed by Mike Levanzin
with Katrina Beckford as Billie Holiday

Saturday 15th May, 7.30pm

After a hugely successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe and a sellout tour God Bless the Child returns for a second national tour including legendary jazz club Ronnie Scotts.

Set in a small nightclub this mesmerizing performance takes the audience on an intimate and personal journey, from a misspent youth in Baltimore through to the lavish jazz joints of the 1930’s Harlem.

Supported by jazz pianist Mike Conliffe this moving insight into one of America’s greatest singers features a wide and varied selection of Lady Day’s greatest songs and darkest secrets.

“See God Bless the Child, a two-hander starring Katrina Beckford as Billie Holiday, with Mike Conliffe on piano. Holiday's tragic life unfolds with tremendous gusto and is punctuated by some of her greatest hits... Her voice drips with emotion. I'm still tingling from a haunting Strange Fruit that set my hair on end” The Scotsman, Edinburgh Fringe

“A tour de force performance, beautifully accompanied throughout by pianist Mike Conliffe” Lancaster Guardian

“Strange Fruit, tore a hole through the audience... an excellent piece” Three Weeks Daily, Edinburgh Fringe
