Service description and features

Our Remote desktop has been designed to enable you to work from anywhere and at any time. Using VMware Horizon Client virtuialisation services, our sector-leading Remote desktop application allows you to access your university documents, folders (H;drive, J;drive) and software applications (Microsoft Office 2013, ASTRA etc.) on your personal PC, Laptop, tablet or even mobile device.
You can access it on campus over eduroam Wi-Fi or off campus over a Wi-Fi or wired internet connection.

Using this software

This service is available to you on all of our campuses (Cambridge, Chelmsford and Peterborough) and at home.
Access to our remote desktop is available to students for the duration of thier studies and to staff for the duration of their employment.

To use the Remote Desktop, you’ll need to install a small client app called VMware Horizon Client, for the best experience you should keep this app up-to-date. The process for downloading the application client is the same for both Student and Staff users. This client can be installed on to any of your personal devices and there is no device limit.

Installing Horizon Client on Windows

Requirements
Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 (32 or 64-bit)

Instructions

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to https://desktop.anglia.ac.uk/
  2. Follow the link to Install VMware Horizon Client
  3. Select the download that’s appropriate for your Windows computer (32 or 64-bit)
  4. Run the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen instructions
  5. Once the installer complete, you will need to reboot your computer before you can use Horizon Client

Once you’ve got the Horizon Client for Windows installed, jump to the Using Horizon Client section below.

Installing Horizon Client on macOS

Requirements macOS 10.9 Mavericks and up

Instructions

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to https://desktop.anglia.ac.uk/
  2. Follow the link to Install VMware Horizon Client
  3. Select the download for VMware Horizon Client for Mac
  4. Mount the downloaded disk image file and drag the VMware Horizon Client app to your Applications folder
  5. The first time your run the Horizon Client app, it will ask you for your Mac’s Administrator password

Once you’ve got the Horizon Client for macOS installed, jump to the Using Horizon Client section below.

Installing Horizon Client on Linux

Requirements Ubuntu 12.04, 14.04; Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.7; SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) 11 SP4; CentOS 6.7

Instructions

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to https://desktop.anglia.ac.uk/
  2. Follow the link to Install VMware Horizon Client
  3. Select the appropriate VMware Horizon Client for Linux bundle (32 or 64-bit)
  4. Open a Terminal
  5. Change directory cd into the location where the installation bundle was saved
  6. Substitute the bundle’s filename into the command:

    sudo sh VMware-Horizon-Client-xxxx-xxxx.xxxx.bundle
  7. Once installed, launch the VMware Horizon Client from your applications and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA)

Installing Horizon Client on iOS

Requirements
iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS 8.4.1 and up

VMware Horizon Client for iOS is a free iOS app, you install it just as you do other third-party iOS apps.

Instructions

  1. Open your device’s App Store
  2. Search for VMware Horizon Client
  3. Tap Get to download the app to your device

Installing Horizon Client on Android and Kindle Fire

Requirements
Android smartphone, tablet or Kindle Fire running Android 4.0 and up

VMware Horizon Client for Android and VMware Horizon Client for Kindle Fire are free Android apps, you install them just as you do other third-party Android apps.

Instructions

  1. Open your device’s Google Play Store, or Amazon Appstore
  2. Search for VMware Horizon Client
  3. Tap Install to download the app to your device

Installing Horizon Client on Chrome OS

Requirements Chrome OS, stable channel, ARC version 41.4410.244.13 or later

Horizon Client for Chrome OS is a free Chrome OS app, and you install it just as you do other third-party Chrome OS apps.

Instructions

  1. Search for the Horizon Client for Chrome OS in the Chrome Web Store
  2. Download and install the app
  3. Open the Horizon Client for Chrome OS app from the Chrome App Launcher

Once you’ve got the Horizon Client for Chrome OS installed, jump to the Using Horizon Client section.

Using Horizon Client

  1. Once you’ve downloaded and installed the VMware Horizon Client onto your device, open it up
  2. Enter the Server Address desktop.anglia.ac.uk and tap Add Server
  3. Accept the Welcome Message
  4. Enter your Anglia Ruskin short username (e.g. abc123) and password then Login
  5. Select your desktop to connect

What applications can I use through Horizon Client?

Users of the remote desktop will have access to most applications that are available when using a regular PC or Thin Client machine on campus with the exception of:

  • Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Visual Studio

How long do I have access to the Horizon Client?

Students have access to our remote desktop for the duration of their studies and access will cease once you have completed your studies.
Staff have access to the remote desktop for the duration of their employment.

Does it cost anything to download the Horizon Client application to my device?

No. This service is completely free.
