December will relatively quiet months for building works, as we prepare for our next wave of major improvements in January 2012, which will be ready for the new term.
December projects
- On the weekend of 10-11 December, we‘ll be putting up fairy lights in Coslett courtyard tree. Some of the courtyard will be closed off, so please take care in this area.
- In the Eastings building, we will be constructing a new interior ramp at the front door, to make the building accessible for people with mobility difficulties. There will be no entry through the front door from 14 December until 23 December. All staff and visitors will need to enter and exit through the rear carpark entrance, off Adam and Eve Street. The accommodation office and finance office will relocate across the road to the main campus where students can visit them for the duration of the work. A pin-code for the gate has been given to staff in the building, and staff will need to activate their security cards for the back door by contacting the Security team, if their card is not already activated.
January projects
- Mellish Clarke 022 will be converted into a teaching and computer space for the Faculty of Science and Technology.
- Bryant 015 is being turned into an electronics lab.
- Mellish Clarke 002 will become a new computer gaming area for students in the Faculty of Science and Technology.
- Mellish Clarke 001 – in this lecture theatre, we will be working with our ISMS colleagues to install new AV equipment.
- Coslett 124 is a lecture theatre that is getting a complete refurbishment.
Building developments in Cambridge
We have three major projects in progress or in the pipeline at the moment. They are:
- Bradmore Street clinic will be our next major building project on campus. It will be on the site that is currently vacant next to the Baptist church, across the road from the Helmore building. Construction is anticipated to start early in the new year. This development will provide a permanent home for the University Eye Clinic which is currently housed in temporary buildings. We aim to open it for the start of the 2012/13 academic year.
- Young Street - we have submitted proposals to the council for a development on Young Street. The site is close to our Cambridge campus, and would be used to house nursing and other Health and Social Care students who are currently based in Fulbourne. It would eventually also house staff who are based in St George House.
- CB1 is a development near Cambridge station where we will have new student accommodation blocks for the 2012/13 academic year. Construction has started, and is on track. We will be leasing the accommodation blocks from the developer on a nomination agreement, which means guaranteed long term availability for our students.
To find out more about these three major building projects, and our recently completed ones, see our external newspaces site.
Recently completed Summer minor works projects:
- Upgrade of external lighting across campus. The new lighting is environmentally friendly, and expected to save up to 40% on energy use.
- We removed the Cambridge Teaching Block behind Peter Taylor House and reinstated the area as a tennis court.
- We redecorated the prayer room and quiet room in the Mumford building.
- We changed the Mumford building ground floor toilets to a unisex facility.
- To improve insulation, we replaced windows in the Mumford library.
- We changed the configuration of rooms on the second and third floors of the Coslett building and added a tea point.
- We converted offices in the Ruskin basement into psychology labs
- For better insulation, we added materials to the Webb building roof.
