Environmental strategy

 

Our Environment Strategy details how we will fulfil the commitments included in our Environmental Policy. It comprises 9 separate action plans involving input from a wide variety of staff and students working together to help make Anglia Ruskin University greener.


Energy

  Trend
Environmental policy commitment Monitor, reduce and report our energy consumption and generate our own low carbon energy in order to reduce our carbon emissions.
Targets Reduce scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions from ARU activities from a 2005-06 baseline by 43% by July 2020.
Reduce carbon emissions to 428 kg CO2 per staff and student FTE by July 2017.

Water

  Trend
Environmental policy commitment Monitor, reduce and report our water consumption.
Targets Reduce our non-residential water consumption to the best practice benchmark standard of 0.4 m3/m2/year.
Reduce our residential water consumption to the benchmark standard of 145 litres/bed space/day.

Waste

Environmental policy commitment 'Reduce reuse and recycle materials to the greatest extent which is reasonably practicable.
Targets Reduce the amount of waste generated to 0.10 tonnes per FTE staff & students.

Travel

Environmental policy commitment Reduce car travel by facilitating walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing.
Targets Reduce single occupancy car commuting for all of our staff and students to less than 17% by October 2017.
Increase awareness of our public transport discounts amongst all of our staff and students to at least 20% by October 2017.

Biodiversity

Purchasing

Education for sustainability

Buildings

Environmental policy commitment Adopt high environmental standards for planning the development of our campuses and construction and refurbishment projects, attaining at least BREEAM ‘Very Good‘ for our new buildings.
Targets Construct new buildings to a BREEAM rating of at least Very Good.
Evaluate the use of the RICS SKA rating for assessing the environmental performance of refurbishment projects.
