Athena SWAN

The Athena SWAN Charter is operated by the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU).  We became members of Athena SWAN in December 2012.  In April 2015 we were proud to achieve an institutional Athena SWAN Bronze Award (a copy of our application is available here). Our self-assessment team was chaired by Dr Rachel Cook, Head of Department, Psychology, Faculty of Science & Technology.

The Charter was originally focused on advancing women's careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) but was expanded in May 2015 to incorporate arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL).  The Charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.
