Module Evaluation 2011 /12

What is Module Evaluation?

Module evaluation surveys should be issued to every student for every module they are registered on within Anglia Ruskin University. The surveys give students the opportunity to comment anonymously on various aspects of their modules and allow our University to collect data on student satisfaction.

Student feedback plays an important role in quality enhancement, enabling Anglia Ruskin University to obtain information about the student experience at a number of levels, linking it to reflective practice, action and quality enhancement. The findings of module evaluation processes inform us where we are succeeding and where we have opportunities to improve our teaching, learning and student satisfaction.

Why is Module Evaluation changing?

As part of our continued efforts to increase the level of engagement by our students with the module evaluation process, and therefore to enhance the student experience overall, Anglia Ruskin has purchased some brand new software with which we will conduct and manage the module evaluation process.

What is changing?

Two aspects of module evaluation will therefore be changing from Semester 1, 2011/12:

  1. The implementation of the new EvaSys software system will enable the module evaluation process to be delivered either by paper or online;
  2. The module evaluation questionnaire has been re-written to re-focus the questions on more academic aspects of the module. This was undertaken by a small working group of Senior Managers and Faculty representatives and will be distributed to students in lectures.

Where are we with the changes now?

Faculty module evaluation contacts have been notified that the module evaluation process is changing.  They were advised that there was a choice as to whether the respective module surveys should be delivered either by paper form, or in an online format.  It was decided that, in order to increase the response rate for 2011/12, paper surveys should be used wherever practical, and online surveys only used at present for modules where it was unlikely that students would physically come onto campus, notably for distance learning modules.

The survey will continue to be run from week 8 to week 12 for semester 1, 2011/12.  For the paper survey, blank paper surveys will be delivered to Faculty module evaluation contacts prior to week 8, respective module leaders/lecturers will collect the paper surveys, and ask students to complete the surveys within lectures.  Following discussions with the Students' Union, it was decided that Student Representatives should collect in the completed surveys, and return them to the Faculty module evaluation contacts. For the online survey, relevant students will be emailed with a link to the survey, and the results returned to the EvaSys system.

The Module Evaluation Process

The Strategic Planning and Policy Unit of the Academic Office will then scan the paper surveys, and the system will automate the results, along with any online responses, to generate results instantly for the module.  Results will be delivered to the Module Leader, via email, along with aggregated reports to the Head of Departments and Senior Management Teams of the respective Faculty.  Results can also be published, through the VLE, for students, although this will be done at a slightly later date.

We will continue to update the website about the new process for staff and students; meanwhile any comments or questions should be directed to the Ozlem Dziadulewicz
