Look and See What is Really Here

Introduction | Michael | Diana | Ivor | Conclusion

The April 2004 graduations marked a significant point in a remarkable period of theological study by Anglia Ruskin University staff. Over the past eighteen months no less than three members of the Chaplaincy team have completed major pieces of work for higher degrees - these include one PhD thesis from Michael Powell and two dissertations for MA Pastoral Theology from Diana Garfield and Ivor Moody.

Reading each other's work in recent weeks the team members have become aware of strong connections and shared themes between the three pieces of writing, and we decided that it would be worthwhile sharing some of our thinking with other interested colleagues. Hence, we have placed here an exploration of our ideas, linking together summaries of the three pieces of work.

All of us have grounded our theology in ordinariness and day-to-day experience. Similarly we are concerned with 'uncovering' a reality in our daily lives which normally remains hidden. Does it just depend on how you look at life? 'Look and see what's really here' says Michael in his thesis. These three pieces of work suggest that there is more here than we may at first perceive.

This culmination of this work has led to the publication of 'Living and Learning - The Story of Chaplaincy on the Chelmsford Campus of Anglia Ruskin University'. It builds on the original Look and See work, but explores much more widely and deeply the history of Chaplaincy on the Chelmsford campus, the perceptions and thoughts of many who have worked with Chaplaincy over the years, and a study of the importance and significance of the choice of John Ruskin as a name for our university, both for Chaplaincy and the institution it serves.
