Information for Undergraduate and Masters students

Applying for ethical approval

We have an on-line ethics course called Introduction to Research and Professional Ethics which is compulsory for all Undergraduate and Masters students who plan to carry out research, and also their supervisors.

This training needs to be completed prior to submission of the Stage 1 Research Ethics Application Form. There is a quiz at the end of the training which needs to be successfully completed and confirmation of this submitted with your Stage 1 Research Ethics Application Form.  The quiz can be attempted as many times as required.

All students and staff must complete the Stage 1 Research Ethics Application Form or Stage 1 Research Ethics Application Form involving Animals and Habitats. This is mandatory for all types of research, including pilot studies.

Students must submit your research ethics application to your Supervisor who will check this first and then send to the relevant Ethics Committee on your behalf.

Please note: some modules are exempt from the ethical review process, but you will be advised of this by your Module Leader.

All Undergraduate and Masters students are strongly advised not to carry out any research falling under the red category.

The Faculty of Science and Technology will not approve any Undergraduate research that is security-sensitive (Stage 3 ethical approval).
