Meet The Team


The Director's Office

Dr Michael Millan, RIDO Director (x4204)
Dr Michael Millan is the Director of the Research and Innovation Development Office at Anglia Ruskin University, where he is responsible for leading activities and functions including the Doctoral School, funding application support, links with key partners, the MedBIC, knowledge transfer, commercialisation and the REF management, as well as the implementation of research strategies.  Prior to taking on this role in September 2016, Michael was the Director Research Operations at Massey University in New Zealand.  Michael's earlier experience includes senior roles in research management in Australian universities as well as 9 years in the pharmaceutical industry.

Sylvie Emmerson, PA to RIDO Director (x4874)
Assisting and supporting the Director of RIDO, managing his diary and dealing with queries, working closely with the RIDO Senior Management Team.   Deals with all office management matters. 

Martin Lawrence, Administrative Assistant (x3153)
Reports to the Director's PA and deals with a variety of administrative tasks required by the Chelmsford team.  Martin also represents RIDO at the Green Guru meetings and the Workplace Health and Wellbeing Committee.

Alexandra Foster, Marketing and Communications Manager (x4632)
Alex works across all RIDO projects and activities and is responsible for overseeing marketing activities in relation to the service. Alex manages the production of key publications such as Research Highlights and Innovation Highlights, as well as supporting and advising colleagues with strategic marketing activity.

Doctoral School

The Directorate

Dr. Alan White, Director of the Doctoral School (x4957)
Alan provides overall leadership and management to the Doctoral School and is responsible for developing and implementing strategy on research students and ethical processes.

Dr. Charlie Nevison, Deputy Director of the Doctoral School (x2281 or x4489)
Charlie coordinates, reviews and develops central strategy and processes regarding the academic and administrative management of Anglia Ruskin’s postgraduate research (PGR)students, and their student experience, from the point of application through to award.

The Research Degrees Administration Team

Lorraine Shotliff (x4909) / Helen van Damme (x4961), Research Degrees Managers
Lorraine and Helen co-ordinate the day-to-day Doctoral School administrative management of Anglia Ruskin's PGR courses and ensure that Anglia Ruskin's Research Degree Regulations and related administrative processes are consistently applied across faculties.

Brigita Mileryte, Research Degrees Examinations Officer (x4912)
Brigita provides specialist advice and administration in connection with the examination (viva stage) of postgraduate research degrees.

Becky Kraszewski, Research Student Admissions Officer (x4920)
Becky is responsible for the processing of PGR student applications and admissions and contribute to the achievement of PGR student recruitment targets.

Sara Donner-Langstone (x4917), Emma Marrow (x4411), Sarah Walters (x4918) and Helen Van Damme (4961): Senior Research Degrees Administrators
Sara, Emma, Sarah and Helen form our professional, pro-active executive secretarial service which supports the work of our Faculty Research Degrees Subcommittees.

Debbie Cutmore, Administrative Assistant (x4488)
Debbie provides general administrative support for all colleagues in the Doctoral School.

The Researcher Development Programme Management Team

Ross Kemble, Research Degrees Training Manager (x4634)
Ross designs, develops, manages and delivers our researcher development programme of professional support and training for PGR students and their supervisors

Allen Mugasha: Researcher Development Administrator (x4209)
Allen administers our researcher development programme for postgraduate research students/ supervisors, and other student facing activities in the Doctoral School.


Enterprise Partnerships

Led by an Assistant Director, Enterprise Partnerships is responsible for business development activities; promoting a range of services including programmes funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), consultancy, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and contract/collaborative research activities. The team is made up of Partnership Development Managers (PDMs) and Business Development Managers (BDMs).

POST VACANT, Assistant Director, Enterprise Partnerships
The AD works in partnership with all faculties to increase the number and quality of non-credit, short courses offered by Anglia Ruskin University. This can include market research, diagnosing the training needs of a business or its employees, responding to bids and tenders, putting in place processes to support the design and delivery of courses and contracts.

The Partnership Development Team

The Partnership Development Managers support the formation of new partnerships and collaborations on behalf of the institution. Whilst they remain part of RIDO, each one is assigned to a Faculty and represents the interests of that Faculty in pursuing new opportunities for partnership and collaboration. They work closely with colleagues from RIDO and across the institution to exploit the research expertise of the Faculty they are assigned to. In particular, the PDMs will develop collaborative research, contract research, knowledge transfer and consultancy opportunities that help each Faculty achieve their objectives.

Amy Wilson, Partnership Development Manager – Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences (x5139)
Amy creates and manages partnerships between ARU and various public, private and civil society organisations in the fields of Arts, Law and Social Sciences, including consultancy services, knowledge transfer, contract research and other collaborative projects. She also works closely with other members of the team to support cross-disciplinary work. Amy would be happy to discuss how your organisation could benefit from working with ARU.

Graeme Hodgson, Partnership Development Manager – Faculty of Health, Education and Social Care (x2955)
Graeme manages RIDO partnerships in the fields of Health, Social Care and Education, including delivery by ARU of consultancy services, contract work including knowledge transfer to private, government and charity sector organisations and innovation enterprises such as development of apps and other forms of collaboration with external partners.

Business Development Team

The Business Development Managers support the delivery of established programmes funded by the European Regional Development Fund, such as KEEP+ and Innovation Bridge and Innovate UK funded Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs). They work across all Faculties and Research Institutes helping academics - keen to share their knowledge - connect with businesses in the East of England who are interested in developing a new product or service innovation.

Richard Allin, Business Development Manager (x2343)
Richard has worked in a variety of sectors and developed a strong track record of delivering successful multi partner projects.  Working for both SME’s and charities has provided a key insight into how challenges can be overcome with Knowledge Transfer. Richard is involved in the Anglia Ruskin University’s Knowledge Exchange programmes. Post-Award Management and Commercialisation

Julia Marsh, Head of Post-Award and Commercialisation (x4965)
Julia proactively leads the development and implementation of systems to support effective management of research and innovation projects at Anglia Ruskin, including commercialisation of research, risk management, data capture and reporting.

Sarah Lamont, Grants Manager (x5953)
Sarah supports the Post-Award process for research grants across the university, and can advise academics and faculty support staff on research grant set-up, monitoring, and closure. She also provides training and workshops for professional and academic staff working on research grant funded projects.

Louise Antoniou, Post-Award Innovation and Knowledge Exchange Grants Manager (x3799)
Louise provides support and guidance to professional, and academic colleagues on the administration and management of grants and contracts, primarily for innovation and knowledge exchange projects.  In addition she provides project management and direct administrative support for specific knowledge exchange projects.

Holly Clover, Project Manager - ERDF Programmes (x2054)
Holly project manages ERDF programmes, namely Innovation Bridge and the GCGP Technical Assistance Project. Holly also supports the delivery of KEEP+ for ARU.

Research and Innovation Funding Development

Hitesh Patel, Assistant Director, Research and Innovation Funding Development

Ruth Sandland, Senior Research Funding Manager - UK (x2553)
Ruth manages the RIDO approvals process for all UK Research Funding bids and can advise academics on all areas of UK grants, including identifying sources of funding, developing bids, producing full economic costings and risk assessments, and submitting proposals to funding organisations. She can also offer training on Je-S, the UK Research Councils' electronic submission system.

Dr Stephen Norton, Research Funding Officer (x5954)
Steve processes grant applications and working with academics to improve chances of success. Steve also runs the ARU Research blog and the Twitter feed, advertising opportunities and tips to our research community. Steve prepares and delivers the Research Funding Observatory with the other Team members, ensuring ARU researchers gain insights to all aspects of research life.

Dr Rosie Burdon, Research Funding Officer (x5846)
Rosie supports academics in finding funding opportunities and with their research funding applications to improve chances of success. Rosie writes and delivers the Research Funding Observatory seminars with the other Team members, ensuring ARU researchers gain insights to all aspects of research life.

Research Excellence and Enhancement

Dr Tim Brooks, Head of Research Excellence and Enhancement (x4305)
Tim is responsible for developing and implementing policy and strategy and managing our engagement with the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and other external initiatives such as open access, and research data management. He is also responsible for managing the institution-wide implementation of our Symplectic CRIS system.

Dr Chrissy Greenwood, Researcher Development Manager (x4633)
Chrissy is responsible for bringing together the good staff researcher development practice that’s already taking place across the university into a more coherent and structured offering, benchmarked against the Vitae Researcher Development Framework, with a view to developing cohort offerings, for example for ECRs.

Jill Smit, Research Policy Co-ordinator (x4208)
Jill advises on matters relating to our research infrastructure and communities and supports the development of our research environment, with a particular emphasis on underpinning future research assessments.  Jill contributes to the development of research policy and strategy, and plans, manages and delivers events in support of the achievement of our research aims. 


Research Ethics and Integrity

Julie Scott, Research Ethics and Integrity Manager (x4210)
Julie leads on the development and delivery of policies for our ethical review and approval processes. Julie provides generic, expert and specialist advice to students and staff on ethical and governance issues, legislation affecting research and requirements for obtaining ethical approval and also runs research ethics training sessions for Doctoral students and Supervisors.

Strategic Innovation

Fiona Bodle, Assistant Director, Strategic Innovation (x3192)
Fiona provides strategic direction across a range of activities to maximise the impact of the University’s activities on the economic growth of the region.  This includes a focus on student entrepreneurship and a growth in both start-ups and existing businesses. Working with a range of stakeholders Fiona engages with Local Authorities, private industry, Government Agencies and industry to accelerate innovation through the provision of facilities and support services.  

Julie Ben Abdeljelil, Strategic Innovation Administrator (x3125)
Julie provides administrative support for the Strategic Innovation team to help build and develop relationships with key stakeholders and partners in order to support delivery of team objectives and operational projects. In addition, Julie provides support for internal governance systems, invoicing and team logistics together with effective management of customer relationships and experience with our University.

The Sector Strategy Team

Dave Rutt, Sector Strategy Manager (x4968)
Dave is responsible for managing a number of activities across the Smart Living Accelerator and Future Cities Accelerator work streams. These include project management, bid development and management, engagement of key external partners and stakeholders and strategy development.

James Smith, Sector Project Officer (x4968)
James supports a range of activities across the sector strategy to maximise the work stream. These include project management , client relationship, bid opportunities and engaging with academics across all faculties.

The MedBIC

Aideen McCambridge, MedBIC Manager (x4631)
Aideen is responsible for leading the development and operation of our Anglia Ruskin Business Innovation Centre for Medical and Advanced Engineering – MedBIC and its activities in order to establish the Centre as an International Centre of Excellence in innovation and business support with an emphasis on medical and advanced technology, low carbon and sustainability. Aideen is responsible for the leadership and management ensuring Innovation Centre delivers quality accommodation for new business start-ups together with innovation support to enable businesses to access the range of support available from our University, including; access to Interns, ERDF Programme activities and Innovation consortia projects.

Lucy Dentice, MedBIC Operations Co-ordinator (x4315)
Lucy ensure that the medbic website is maintained, looks professional and that the telecoms and IT run smoothly to minimise disruption for our valued businesses. Lucy supports the MedBIC Manager and marketing team through event marketing, social media and client communications for the Centre. Lucy also supports the finance and legal team through coordination of invoices and charges and preparation and maintenance of legal contracts.

Hilary Jones and Sandra Hammond, MedBIC Receptionists (x3177)
Hilary and Sandra are the first point of contact for enquiries about the MedBIC. They deal with queries and provide administrative and reception support for both the Centre Manager and occupants as well as assisting in all elements of the day to day running of the Centre.
