VOLUNTEERING AT MIKUMI
Volunteer assistant's responsibilities
include:
- Collection and management of data for a variety of research projects.
- Participation in a variety of non research projects e.g., collaborating
with Park official to maintain the Park museum, involvement in production
of Park newsletter.....
- Administration and management of the field station facilities and
Tanzanian employees.
- Liaison and collaboration with individuals and institutions within
Tanzania.
Essential qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree, preferably biological.
- Minimum of one year commitment; potential to commit for longer an
advantage.
- Ability to live in a small social unit under isolated conditions.
- Willingness and physical ability to work long hours under arduous
conditions and to cope with the hazards and dangers of working on foot
in the African bush.
Financial considerations:
ABRU covers research costs, permits, housing and a stipend and is usually
able to cover airfares. The stipend is designed to cover basic living
costs in Mikumi National Park and will not cover "luxuries"
such as cigarettes, alcohol, expensive packaged foods imported from the
west, personal travel, phone calls home etc. Volunteer assistants
are expected to cover pre-travel vaccinations (variable cost), medical
insurance (~£300) and extra spending money to top up the stipend
(~£100/ month).
How to Apply
If, after reading about ABRU and what is required of ABRU volunteers,
you want to register your interest in being an ABRU volunteer then send:
- a covering letter (which should include an indication of the dates
you would be available);
- your curriculum vitae;
- two references.
